How to Find Name of Music Using the Melody

So I came across this piano solo which I found familiar in an animation and wanted to know the name of it very badly. Although it is a BGM, meaning that there are other sound or voices going on at the same time, the melody is easily recognizable.
So I started looking for its name and here’s the tools I used:

1. Midomi (SoundHound)
This is a famous tool for finding music by singing or humming. It records at least 10s of sound using the microphone and then search in the database. For most song it works, however, since it is a piano solo this time, there was no result.

2. Shazam Encore
This tool is famous for finding out music with part of it. It requires recording the original song and therefore failed because there were other voices and sound effects in the animation as the music plays.

3. Musipedia Music Search by Flash-based Piano
Failed with my usual tools, I googled ‘how to find a piano music’ and found this to be the first result. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was even impressed because the website allows me to find the music by playing the melody! I was not sure about the notes so I tried several times. Finally I was able to recreate part of the melody using the simulated piano and proceeded to search. It took a little while (about 1 min) but there were results with Youtube videos of the music being played! I clicked the first one and Voilà! There it is! It’s Claude Debussy’s ‘La fille aux cheveux de lin’!

That sums up my music seeking journey and I wish that everyone can find the name of the music they like~

在线音乐电台网站推荐 | Online Music Radio Websites

Grooveshark

It’s been a while since my last blog about music so here’s one to fill that gap. I’ve been listening to music online lately mainly for the purpose of seeking for new songs. In the past I’ve tried grooveshark which provides online music playing service and I would always play all the songs in the ‘Popular’ list to find out new songs that I like. It’s been useful since I managed to find about 3 albums that fits my appetite. However, the ‘Popular’ song list remained almost unchanged for several months and I realized it’s time to try some thing else.

Jango

Then I found jango, which I believe to have already visited several years ago when I visited Hawaii. The nice thing about it is that you’re able to hear songs you are very likely to appreciate with a few clicks. And the radio station can be tailored little by little to meet exactly your need. Beside the website, Jango also has its iOS App that can be used on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad without cost. You can therefore listen to and modify your stations on your handheld device conveniently. You are also able to remove the ads in the app by linking your jango account with your facebook account, which unfortunately is unavailable here in China.

There are of course other English online music websites available, please feel free to share with everyone in the comment. 🙂

至于中文的在线音乐,相信酷狗的名头已经家喻户晓了。不过若是有其他任何优秀的在线音乐站点,也请留言分享。

Mac OS X真有趣| Mac OS X is interesting

I happened to have tried a Mac tonight and found it really interesting. There’s an application on it called “GarageBand” which has free guitar and piano lessons, you can even connect your instruments to Mac for more help. How amazing! I guess I’m beginning to discover the reason why people love Mac.

BTW, I’m also starting to think of learning a musical instrument, it’ll be great for my spiritual life and might be my strong-point in the future.
